Springing into March with a Focus on Health

Happy March, Pathways Family! What an important, transitional time of year. When I think of March, I tend to think of flowers blooming, the first signs of Spring, and the daylight stretching later into the evening.

Another important aspect of March is that it is Colorectal Cancer Screening Month. It is a time where we promote and discuss the importance of getting screenings and prioritizing your own health. Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, and the second leading cancer death among men and women in the U.S.

However, colorectal does not have to be as deadly as it is. If found in the first stage, the five-year survival rate is 90 percent. However, five-year survival drops to only 14 percent if caught in the final stage, which is why it is so important to have regular screenings.

As someone who lost two grandparents to this cancer, I feel a personal connection to both the horrors of this disease and the importance of early screenings. Having a screening this month could save your life, so check out these resources now to see how you can prioritize your health this March.

For information on how to get a FREE colorectal screening at the Pathways’ clinic: call Ron Thompson at 804-862-1104 ext. 301.
