Chief Executive Officer

Pathways, a not-for-profit, faith-based community organization in Petersburg, Virginia, is seeking a full-time Chief Executive Officer to build upon and strengthen the organization’s 20 years of partnership with residents of Petersburg and the greater Richmond area.

The Organization
Our mission is to build pathways to education and employment, good health, and a revitalized community. Pathways accomplishes its mission through a series of comprehensive and holistic programs.  Pathways has been the only interfaith community development organization working in Petersburg since its inception in 1995 and incorporation in 1997.  Pathways began an affiliated YouthBuild program in 2001, working with opportunity youth to earn their HSD or GED, enroll in secondary education, and/or find employment.   Pathways opened the first free specialty medical care clinic in Petersburg in 2007, assisting the uninsured and underinsured obtain care.  In 2008, Pathways opened its state-of-the-art headquarters in what was once a supermarket. In 2009, we opened the only free specialized training school in the area. In 2013, we began a partnership to provide job training and employment assistance to local correctional facilities. Pathways continues to work with Petersburg residents to build lives and awaken hope for the region.

Organization Description and Key Responsibilities

Pathways is governed by a 10-member board of directors, has a staff of 30, and a $2+M budget with major work in youth and leadership development, education and workforce development, offender re-entry programs, health and wellness, veteran housing, and community based research.

Key areas of responsibility include strategic direction; fund development; external relations; internal leadership; financial, program, and facility oversight; and board development and relations.

The Position

The overall goal of Pathways for the next three years is to be recognized as a leading organization in transformation and systemic change for the region.

Toward these ends, the near-term priorities for the first 12-18 months of the new CEO’s tenure include:

  • Establish relationships with Pathways’ partners, investors, and stakeholders.
  • Lead the organization’s strategic direction and continue developing a strong Board/management team partnership.
  • Enhance the organization’s fund development program to address changes in public sector funding within the current economic environment while continuing to draw on a broader audience of private sector resources.
  • Pursue the development of programs that respond to major shifts in government policy regarding education, research, re-entry, community health, and workforce development.
  • Execute a marketing/communication plan to enhance Pathways’ messaging and brand to a broader audience with an expanded geographic reach.

Key Responsibilities

The Chief Executive Officer, reporting to the Board of Directors, is responsible for providing overall leadership, direction, and operational and financial management. The CEO works in partnership with the senior management team.

Key areas of responsibility include strategic direction; fund development; external relations; internal leadership; financial, program, and facility oversight; and board development and relations.

Experience and Attributes
Ideal candidates for this position will have a passion for working with all people to overcome barriers and reach their full potential.  Desired experiences/attributes include:

  • Self-starting, creative, proactive leader
  • Successful resource and revenue growth and development
  • History of leading a regional effort with a grass roots constituency
  • High degree of financial literacy and successful track record of managing government grants
  • History of building and growing strong staff and governance teams including commitment to asset-based management and staff wellness
  • Experience in building strong relationships with and between constituents
  • Track record of successful marketing and communications technology including social media
  • Commitment to living by shared values and a high degree of personal and organizational integrity that appreciates and celebrates diversity
  • Ten years of experience as a senior leader and manager and at minimum a Master’s Degree (or comparable combination of experience and credentials)
  • Ability to initiate, develop, and lead  high level strategic partnerships with faith communities, government, universities, hospitals, and other institutions
  • History of community based participatory research
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Career Placement Coordinator

Pathways, a not-for-profit, faith-based organization in Petersburg, Virginia, is seeking a full-time Career Placement Coordinator to work in its youth and adult leadership, education, and career development programs that include juvenile and adult offenders and out-of-school youth. The position will include placement site networking/coordination for internships, training and job shadowing opportunities, and employment.

Qualification Requirements:

• Minimum of bachelors degree and 5 years experience in a related field

Nurse Practitioner

Pathways, a not-for-profit, faith-based community organization in Petersburg, Virginia, is seeking a Nurse Practitioner for its Free Specialty Clinic. The position will include program design and planning, assessments, treatment, referrals, and coordination of care in a community setting. The position will include work with young adults and families in our clinics as well as our community health outreach projects.

Qualification requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, management, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding of diverse community health issues
  • Community setting experience a plus
  • Family Nurse Practitioner preferred
  • Self-Starter
  • Experience working collaboratively in a diverse team setting

Case Manager

Pathways, a not-for-profit, faith-based organization in Petersburg, Virginia, is seeking a full-time Case Manager to work in its youth/young adult leadership, education, and career development programs that focus on youth ages 17-24 and include juvenile offenders and out-of-school youth. The Career Coach will assist students in setting and achieving career goals and will provide ongoing support and counseling in dealing with obstacles to success. This position will also require classroom instruction in life skills and career readiness.

Qualification requirements:

• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, time management, and written and verbal communication skills
• Minimum of bachelors degree and 5 years experience in a related field, MSW preferred
• Experience working collaboratively in a diverse team setting while being flexible and adaptable
• Excellent computer skills

• Experience in coordinating program elements in various settings
• Ability to thrive amidst chaos
• Must be able to pass a State Background Check

Construction Foreman

Pathways, a not-for-profit, faith-based community organization in Petersburg, Virginia, is seeking a full-time Construction Foreman for its youth/young adult leadership, education, and career development programs. Programs focus on youth ages 17-24 and include juvenile offenders and out-of-school youth. Responsibilities include individual and group instruction in both seat-time and experiential setting that leads to the construction/rehabilitation of single-family homes. Ability to incorporate math skills training with vocational skills training using project based learning required. Women are encouraged to apply.

• Functional mathematical skills

• Five years hands-on construction experience

Academic Instructor

Pathways, a not-for-profit, faith-based organization in Petersburg, Virginia, is seeking a full-time Academic Instructor for its youth/young adult leadership, education, and career development programs. Programs focus on youth ages 17-24 and include juvenile offenders and out-of-school youth. Responsibilities include coordination of academic program, individual and group instruction toward a HSD, development of ILPs, remedial instruction, and college preparation. Subjects will include both mathematics and language arts and coordination with vocational instructors for educational integration and project based learning.

Qualification requirements:

• Bachelor's Degree
• Mastery of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Excellent classroom management skills
• Drivers' license with good driving record
• A minimum of two years experience working with individuals in remedial, alternative, adult education or specialized programs is preferred

HAZWOPER Instructor

Pathways is seeking a HAZWOPER Instructor to teach one class of approximately 10 students off-site this Spring. Pathways has all the HAZWOPER training equipment available. Classes will take place Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings. The student population will be made up primarily of individuals with no experience in Hazardous Waste Operations.

Qualification requirements:

• Part-Time position
• Experience teaching adults required
• 1-2 years experience in field preferred

Petersburg Wellness Consortium Director

The Petersburg Wellness Consortium in Petersburg, Virginia, is seeking a full-time Director to coordinate outreach efforts, build capacity, establish partnerships, and oversee communications. This is the first paid staff position for a volunteer led organization that seeks to become a 501(c)3, not-for-profit corporation.

The PWC has three focus areas: Oral Health, Youth Health and Wellness, and Chronic Disease.

Community Outreach Coordinator

Pathways, a not-for-profit, faith-based organization in Petersburg, Virginia, is seeking a part-time (20 hrs per week) Community Outreach Coordinator to manage the community aspects of the WE Project pilot intervention, a National Institute of Health funded project dealing with improving nutrition and increasing physical activity in Petersburg . Responsibilities will include supporting local residents working as Wellness Ambassadors, ensuring accurate research records are obtained and kept for consistent and accurate reporting, coordination of community events, and recruitment of project participants..

Qualification requirements:

• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, time management, and written and verbal communication skills
• Bachelors degree preferred
• 2 years work experience in community organizing
• Experience working collaboratively in a diverse team setting
• Networking skills
• Experience in community based health research a plus
• Valid driver's license with good driving record
• Mastery of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel
