Chief Executive Officer

Pathways, a not-for-profit, faith-based community organization in Petersburg, Virginia, is seeking a full-time Chief Executive Officer to build upon and strengthen the organization’s 20 years of partnership with residents of Petersburg and the greater Richmond area.

The Organization
Our mission is to build pathways to education and employment, good health, and a revitalized community. Pathways accomplishes its mission through a series of comprehensive and holistic programs.  Pathways has been the only interfaith community development organization working in Petersburg since its inception in 1995 and incorporation in 1997.  Pathways began an affiliated YouthBuild program in 2001, working with opportunity youth to earn their HSD or GED, enroll in secondary education, and/or find employment.   Pathways opened the first free specialty medical care clinic in Petersburg in 2007, assisting the uninsured and underinsured obtain care.  In 2008, Pathways opened its state-of-the-art headquarters in what was once a supermarket. In 2009, we opened the only free specialized training school in the area. In 2013, we began a partnership to provide job training and employment assistance to local correctional facilities. Pathways continues to work with Petersburg residents to build lives and awaken hope for the region.

Organization Description and Key Responsibilities

Pathways is governed by a 10-member board of directors, has a staff of 30, and a $2+M budget with major work in youth and leadership development, education and workforce development, offender re-entry programs, health and wellness, veteran housing, and community based research.

Key areas of responsibility include strategic direction; fund development; external relations; internal leadership; financial, program, and facility oversight; and board development and relations.

The Position

The overall goal of Pathways for the next three years is to be recognized as a leading organization in transformation and systemic change for the region.

Toward these ends, the near-term priorities for the first 12-18 months of the new CEO’s tenure include:

  • Establish relationships with Pathways’ partners, investors, and stakeholders.
  • Lead the organization’s strategic direction and continue developing a strong Board/management team partnership.
  • Enhance the organization’s fund development program to address changes in public sector funding within the current economic environment while continuing to draw on a broader audience of private sector resources.
  • Pursue the development of programs that respond to major shifts in government policy regarding education, research, re-entry, community health, and workforce development.
  • Execute a marketing/communication plan to enhance Pathways’ messaging and brand to a broader audience with an expanded geographic reach.

Key Responsibilities

The Chief Executive Officer, reporting to the Board of Directors, is responsible for providing overall leadership, direction, and operational and financial management. The CEO works in partnership with the senior management team.

Key areas of responsibility include strategic direction; fund development; external relations; internal leadership; financial, program, and facility oversight; and board development and relations.

Experience and Attributes
Ideal candidates for this position will have a passion for working with all people to overcome barriers and reach their full potential.  Desired experiences/attributes include:

  • Self-starting, creative, proactive leader
  • Successful resource and revenue growth and development
  • History of leading a regional effort with a grass roots constituency
  • High degree of financial literacy and successful track record of managing government grants
  • History of building and growing strong staff and governance teams including commitment to asset-based management and staff wellness
  • Experience in building strong relationships with and between constituents
  • Track record of successful marketing and communications technology including social media
  • Commitment to living by shared values and a high degree of personal and organizational integrity that appreciates and celebrates diversity
  • Ten years of experience as a senior leader and manager and at minimum a Master’s Degree (or comparable combination of experience and credentials)
  • Ability to initiate, develop, and lead¬† high level strategic partnerships with faith communities, government, universities, hospitals, and other institutions
  • History of community based participatory research
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

PCA Instructor

Pathways, a not-for-profit, faith-based community development corporation in Petersburg, Virginia, is seeking a part-time licensed RN to instruct a Personal Care Aide class for young adults in a juvenile correctional facility. Instructor must be able to develop and execute lesson plans and report student accomplishments.

Minimum qualifications: RN, mastery of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel, good oral and written communication skills, excellent classroom management skills, drivers' license with good driving record, and love of teamwork, and a minimum of two years relevant work experience including remedial education/training.

Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Pathways, a not-for-profit, faith-based community development corporation in Petersburg, Virginia, is seeking a part-time Nurse Practitioner for its Free Specialty Clinic. The position will include program design and planning, assessments, treatment, referrals, and coordination of care focused primarily on young adults and their mental health needs.

Qualification requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, management, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding of diverse mental/social/behavioral health issues
  • Community setting experience a plus
  • Self-Starter
  • Experience working collaboratively in a diverse team setting
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel

This is a part-time salaried position with flexible hours and paid leave benefits.
